The Siracusa Quilt Pattern is the inaugural quilt pattern in the Italia Collection by Quiltd Studios. I have always loved ginghams and wanted to design a pattern that modernized the classic buffalo check. Designed for advanced beginners, Siracusa uses the following quilting skills:
- Strip cutting
- Strip quilting
- Consistent ¼” seams
Siracusa is a great pattern for beginners who want to practice sewing strip sets and using strip cutting.
For several years I lived in Italy, and wanted to design and name quilts that were inspired by my love of Italian cities that I've lived in or visited. I studied Italian in college and even double majored in it! I'm excited to share more about each pattern name and it's significance in each pattern.
One of the reasons I love making the Siracusa quilt is how incredibly fast it comes together. Rather than a traditional piecing method (squares + squares), strip piecing is magical. It does require attention to detail, strip cuts need to be cut accurately, however, this pattern is somewhat forgiving.
I started strip cutting a while ago and thought, every quilt should be made using this method! I use a slotted ruler like this one, to square my fabric every 3-4 cuts and make the strips. It’s amazing, if you don’t have a slotted ruler yet, now is the time to add it to your Christmas list!

Quiltd Studios Original Siracusa Quilt Pattern
The cover quilt for Siracusa features a contemporary fabric palette:
- Kona Black
- Kona White
- Benartex Cotton Shot Steel
- Binding: Northcott Toscana Cinnamon
- Backing: White Sherpa
I designed Siracusa to be versatile in colorways; it is fantastic for any palette! I chose black and white because it matches my décor, and I wanted this quilt to have in my living room for cozying up.
The binding is a unique color, I wanted a fabric that mimicked saddle leather, that warm and inviting color that grounds rooms (and matches my leather poufs!). The Toscana Cinnamon was a perfect choice, I think it added a great detail to the starkness of the quilt top.
White Sherpa is the coziest fabric I could find (Joann’s, on sale!) and it is perfect for the backing of Siracusa Modern Gingham. I love how it completes the quilt and adds a textural element.
Siracusa in Shades of Green
I wanted an extra cheery version of Siracusa to snuggle up in for the holidays, so I chose green! The greens are a perfect mix of contemporary and modern. The quilt top fabrics are a mix of Moda and Kona fabrics. You can make the same cheery quilt top by buying the bundle available HERE
The backing is my favorite, Rifle Paper Co Nutcracker in Evergreen Metallic. There are hints of gold and it is literal magic. I might just keep it out year-round.
